In Hawaii, the beach is truly our playground and it can be yours too! If you are planning to visit the North Shore during your vacation, grab a surfboard and jump in the water at our top five surf spots for surfers of all experience levels:
1. Banzai Pipeline
Travel to the famous Banzai Pipeline, home to countless surf competitions including Billabong Pipeline Masters. Located at Ehukai Beach Park, Pipeline is at its peak swell during the winter season and rideable only by highly experienced surfers.
2. Chun’s Reef Beach
Another well-known beach for surfers is Chun’s, named after former resident and avid surfer John Chun. This picturesque, white sand beach is ideal for beginning surfers in the summer and spotting turtles occasionally too. For additional help, there are many surf schools nearby that offer lessons for newbies.
3. Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach, originally called Paumalu, is another well-known surf beach boasting huge waves during the winter season. Every year, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing competition is held here as part of the World Cup of Surfing. Intermediate surfers can ride here and enjoy perfect waves under the North Shore sun but before the lava rock coral formations.
4. Haleiwa Beach
Located near Haleiwa town is Pua‘ena Point, also known as Haleiwa Beach Park. This beach is a popular choice for surf schools teaching visitors for the first time. If you are lucky enough, you might spot a turtle crawling on the soft sand for rest—but remember to leave it alone!
5. Kuilima Point
Farther down the road nearing Kahuku is a soft wave surf break on the left side of Turtle Bay Resort. This beach is open to the public and ideal for beginners who are interested in learning how to surf.
